hey,i was just wondering if anyone had a list or knew anything about the maximum size allowed for a carry on(camera bag) when i bouhgt my bag, the tag attached said ok for carry on, but it's pretty big and heavy. it's a tamrac, cyberpack8, thanks

The trick to get through airport security is to empty the bag in to the boxes provided. there fore no one has to pick it up and you won't be done for weight/.....It is getting harder to travel with camera gear so you have to be more street wise.....never ask a airport person regarding your size of your bag....etc...they will always say no!

It's easy to figure out. Simply go to the website for whichever airline on which you are going to fly. They have the restrictions for baggage listed in the information area for travelers. Hard to give a blanket statement as the restrictions can vary from each airline.

Yes! Each airline has different regulations. although most are the same.
I do fair amount of international travel. And have found that the size is pretty standard. That of a typical carry on bag that is marked as carry on aprooved. But more and more I am finding that the weight also matters. The weight that seems to be popular is about 8 Kilograms or 20 pounds.
I travel with a lowepro dryzone 200 this meets the size requirments. (provided I don't pack it full) But what has been tripping me up is this weight restriction. On one flight I was allowed to fly in to a location with a heavy bag but forced to reduce the weight on the reture flight. I actually blame this on a subcontractor that had just won the bid to handle ticketing for that airline.
On an upcomming trip to south America I will be flying within a reagion whith tighter restrictions. 20 pound for carry on and 40 pounds for checked luggage.
For me weight seems to be my biggest obstical I will be facing in my future travels

Upon initial ticket check-in, for a domestic flight in Canada a few years ago, my Tamrac was 2lbs overweight for carry-on luggage and I was asked to remove some items. As my suitcase was completely full,I had nowhere to to put the items except in my jacket pocket. I advised the attendent of this and the fact that there was no difference whether the items are in my carry-on or in my pocket, the combined weight of my camera bag and myself would still be the same once on the flight. The individual didn't seem to get it nor was payment for the extra weight an option. Also, the fact that the guy behind me weighed approx 250lbs to my 175lbs did not matter either.
I am now proceeding to the scanners and I am saying to myself "What do you think those officers will say/do when I kick off the scanner alarms with a 11/2 lb Manfrotto Ball Head in one pocket and a 85mm Nikkor in the other - would they confiscate one/both? What would have happened if the chosen item I was now carrying was a 2lb tripod instead of the items above.
I decided to take a chance and return the items back to the Tamrac Bag. As luck would have it, it passed the inspection and the bag was not reweighed.
Sometimes common sense,when dealing with airlines,is not an option. Always be prepared for the unexpected for both domestic and international flights.

The only issue I have had when flying is that I carry a 20GB Wolverine memory card storage hard drive or a 40GB external mini USB hard drive (depending on weather I have access to a laptop where I go). Without fail they always ask me to remove that item (which ever it is) and place it in the grey tray and let it get scanned a part from my bag. Never had a bag weighted yet.
If it matters I normally travel out of Richmond to Pittsburgh or Atlanta.

I have the same bag and I have had no problem taking it on as a carry on luggage. Even with my lap top in it with three lens, filters,chargers,extra batteries, and a Canon 30D SLR camera. I pack a lot of extras in it just in case. I have never ( knock on wood ) had a problem as of today.
I was a little nervos the first fue times So I just take my time and the only thing I have to do is remove the computer befor it goes through the machine.

Each situation is a bit different. For example, so-called regional jets provide for little or no carry-on room, so you can't carry on a camera bag. Carry-on weight limits run from about 11 lbs to 40 lbs depending on the airline and the plane. Please understand that what you wear does not count against carry-on limits. I have on a photo jacket with large pockets and a photo vest also with large pockets. Since some airlines weigh the carry-on luggage, even though it meets size req., I put 2 bodies and 2-3 lenses in my photo jacket. I use homemade polarcloth bags to protect the item (chargers, sensor cleaner, etc.) I put in my carry-on. I would also add that in times of emergency (e.g., landing in the Hudson River) all luggage is to be left on the plane, si I carry all my CF cards in my photo vest which I leave on at all times. So far I have never had a problem and I have literally traveled all over the globe in the last 10 years.

A camera bag can be carried on as the second piece, which usually should fit under the seat -- in addition to the roll-type or satchel carry on which has size and weight limit. There is no reason that one cannot fill the larger carry on bag (such as one with wheels or satchel) as long as it fulfills the weight limits and size. In most airports shoes must be removed as well as large belts, watches and other metal objects. Jackets and vests must be removed and go into the x-ray machine. It is suggested that luggage, both carry on and checked be packed in layers, where electronics (in carry on bags) wires be coiled and not left helter skelter. For weights and sizes, it is best to check with the initial airline booked -- the other air lines will abide by the initial airlines limits. It is especially imorotant to abide with British Airways, they are tough as far as weight. Any carry on liquids over 3 ounces will be confiscated -- so make sure this is followed. I have had no problems with any photo gear - cameras, flash, cards, filters and such. In those cases where I will have camera or equipment that may be questionable as to purchase, i carry the required custom form for personal effects taken abroad -- form 4457 -- this form lists description icluding serial numbers and can be obtained at any airport customs and stamped there. I have only once been asked for this. But the form(s) are small (about 5-1/2 by 4 inches. Now that prices of electronics are not cheaper in foreign countries, this may be a thing of the past. But for very expensive or precious material, the use may be important. As mentioned, check with TSA and the Airline.
